Our tips
Discover Tyrol Castle, the cultural centrepiece of South Tyrol. The imposing castle, built between 1138 and 1160, served as the residence of the Counts of Vinschgau and gave its name to the Tyrol region for almost a millennium. Since 1972, the castle has belonged to the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and today houses the Provincial Museum of Cultural and Regional History.
The castle impresses with its richly decorated marble portal and the Romanesque works of art at the chapel entrance. Particularly worth seeing are the three domed arched windows in the great hall and the two-storey chapel with round apse. Here you will find a Gothic altar, marble sculptures, early Gothic wall paintings and the oldest stained glass in Tyrol. An impressive, wood-carved crucifixion group from the 14th century rounds off the historic ensemble.
Experience the fascinating world of birds of prey and owls up close at the care centre for bird fauna on the castle hill at Castle Tyrol. This unique attraction allows visitors to admire majestic birds of prey and mysterious owls at close range and look them straight in the eye. An unforgettable experience that delights nature lovers and families alike.
